LisanyKrug Mareto

I study the trail epidemics leave behind in mothers and children — and what makes a vaccine reach, or fail to reach, the people who need it.

About

I am a nurse trained at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Brazil, where I also completed my master's degree and am now a PhD candidate in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.

My work is epidemiology. Instead of following one patient at a time, I look at health data from entire populations to understand what happened — and what could have been prevented.

It started with an undergraduate research fellowship funded by CNPq, studying pregnant women infected with Zika virus in Campo Grande during the 2015–2017 epidemic. That question never let go of me: I still investigate what happens to those children years later.

Research

Three questions organise what I investigate.

Congenital Zika

What happens to children exposed to Zika virus in the womb? I study neurological and developmental outcomes years after exposure, alongside the congenital anomalies recorded during the 2015–2018 epidemic.

Vaccination coverage and hesitancy

How many children are actually vaccinated — and how much of that can official figures really see? My master's thesis assessed the sensitivity of childhood vaccination coverage data in Campo Grande. In parallel, I investigate why families delay or refuse vaccines.

Health surveillance and data quality

Bad data becomes bad policy. I work on congenital syphilis, dengue, HIV and yellow fever, looking at what information systems record, what they miss, and how much that changes a decision.
