I conduct research on infectious and parasitic diseases: the impact of arboviruses on communities, and the main strategies to be developed to mitigate the problems caused by epidemic diseases and their epidemiological dynamics.

About

I am a nurse trained at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Brazil, and I am currently a PhD candidate in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at the same university, where I also completed my master's degree.

It started with an undergraduate research fellowship funded by CNPq, studying pregnant women infected with Zika virus in Campo Grande during the 2015–2017 epidemic. From that first experience came my interest in how the behaviour of arboviruses can affect vulnerable groups above all — whether in terms of health conditions or socioeconomic and social context.

Research

Three questions organise what I investigate:

Impact on society

How the arrival of arboviruses leaves a trail of economic burden, lost productivity at work and an overloaded public health system, and what the short- and long-term consequences are.

Vaccination coverage and other control strategies

From vaccine development through all its phases to how the immunobiological product behaves in the population according to vaccination coverage and prior exposure to the disease, clinical outcomes in severe and non-severe cases, and long-term protection.

Arbovirus behaviour

How social behaviour, customs, socioeconomic stratification and, today, climate change shift the geographic pattern of infectious disease incidence.
